Two troopers were called shortly before 9:45 p.m. on Oct. 20, to a stretch of eastbound lanes on I-66, when a woman went off the road and into a retention pond near exit 60 (Route 123).
The vehicle became submerged, according to police, and the driver was trapped, leading to a brave rescue by the troopers, who were able to get her out of the vehicle through its sunroof.
She was taken to an area hospital for evaluation and treatment of undisclosed injuries. The troopers were also evaluated by paramedics due to the cold temperatures.
It is unclear what caused the crash, which remains under investigation on Monday afternoon.
